‘Man is a social being- communication is therefore the key to socialisation. At every stage in our lives we require someone to talk to and interact with. Our lives cannot be lived in isolation but through communication with one another.
To feel accepted in the society that we belong to today, a human being changes to a social being and learns-communication and its tough role through the environment that he/she is exposed to which happens to be the schools and other factors around it.
Today's kids communicate face to face, by using social media, using online gaming platforms to talk to one another. While everyone talks about communication skills that are so important for kids today- as a teacher I agree to that and would like to share my experience in this field.
Society divides kids today into two noticeable halves. On the basis of their communication skills- one are the introverts- the ones who find this process tough, the ones who are not very out-going.
The other one are- Extroverts- The ones who find communicating with peers, friends, or even people older to them- a slightly easier process- the ones who enjoy the company of others around them, are noticably out going.
For a teacher- these two halves of children are evident and noticable but again, for her each child is different and special in his/her own way so it's easy for her to avoid or ignore the difference. At this point, many of you readers are offended about the distinction I just pointed out in children. But most of you, might agree to the fact that this distinction is made and noticed by me.
Once a child grows up it's possible that he has to restart the process of making friendships and connections. At that point, it will be difficult for some to talk to new people, clients in office, etc. Therefore, it's important that children understand that communication is an important process at all stages in life. Kids taught at a school- going age find the socialization process easier among classmates and others.
What can parents and teachers do together for better communication skills in children?
As a teacher at school- To improve the child's ability to communicate make sure that he is allowed to express himself- in ways of giving him group assignments, group discussions where the child can lead the group.
As a parent at home- Make sure you allow your child to communicate better with you. Allow him to describe his day at school and talk to him about anything. The parents must encourage the child to talk where the parent is a keen listener.Make sure you ask your child relevant questions to engage him in conversations. Try to let your child speak to relatives in a social setting.
To conclude here, I would say communication for kids today is a changing process where the child learns something new everyday. Parents, teachers and educational institutions together can work hard to bring about a positive change in the child's life and it is only going to help the child if he puts his efforts and time-will he be able to communicate better if not the best.
Lastly, each child is special. So there is no room for competition in the field of basic skill sets to be pointed out to- so it should be avoided as much as possible.
